The lab is completely geared up toward finishing a book about the Clovis and Older-than-Clovis occupations at the Gault Site. Assignments have been made and, including our staff there are at least 37 researchers working on sections of it. We really do hope to have a draft done by the fall. Of course, there will be many topics we are unable to cover in this book but we hope that many of these avenues will be deeply explored by students – we have had 6 PhD’s and 11 MA’s come out of this material so far (there is currently one PhD and two MA’s in the works) and there is still a lot to explore. Since the GSAR’s mission is research and education we are particularly proud of our role in these.

By my count we tested and surveyed 21 sites in 2015 with three still looking promising for early occupations. Our Texas Field Director,Dr. Steve Howard, has been working with an ever-increasing band of intrepid volunteers to see if they can find sites that we could compare to Gault. By almost any measure Gault is unusual so we would like a better picture of what the norm was like here in Texas. Steve spends a lot of his time (when he isn’t teaching at ACC) meeting with landowners and guiding our volunteers through what archaeologists do in the field.

Staff member Sergio Ayala wears many hats here:photographer, illustrator, experimental knapper, lithic analyst as well as working on his MA in archaeology at the University of Exeter (UK). Now he is working in a joint effort with staff from the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross University (cbbs.sulross.edu) to enlarge our knowledge of the Calf Creek/Andice/Bell projectiles and their related culture. Sergio has been minutely studying the technology of these projectile points and is now trying to find out more about how far this technology spread.
